Calgary’s ASIST teaches frontline workers suicide intervention skills | Calgary Herald
We all have a role to play in suicide prevention. Suicide is consistently a leading cause of death among Albertans ages and every year more Albertans die by suicide than the number of people who die in motor vehicle collisions. In addition, there are close to 6, emergency department visits and 2, hospitalizations every year for self-inflicted injuries. This day provides opportunities to focus public attention on the burden and costs of suicidal behaviours, as well as to highlight diverse activities that promote understanding about suicide, and suicide prevention. Key Messages Talk about it. Know the signs. Prevent it.
Almost everyone at some time in his or her life thinks about suicide. It does not discriminate. It happens to young and old, rich and poor.
Asking for help can be hard. What if they think badly of me? I feel awkward talking about it. If you are struggling, reach out. We can help you explore your options, understand your problems better, or just be there to listen.
